6:55 PM — Wedgewood starts for Trenton, Kent Simpson for Toledo.
Titans lines are:
6:20 PM — The ice isn’t perfect, but I’m told the game will start on time.
5:15 PM — Here are the remainder of the moves: Jacob Drewiske and Stephen Schultz have been put on reserve, Ryan Hayes is headed to the 21-Day IR and Kory Nagy is now active.
4:40 PM — Thinking those are more than just smudges. With the level of attention being paid to the areas of the ice I wrote about earlier, there may be a serious ice issue ahead. Here’s a photo from a minute ago of exactly what one spot on the penalty box side of the blue line looks like.
The Zamboni has been out seven or eight times today that I’ve seen, and that can’t be a real good sign. Hopefully it’s minor.
4:20 PM — Good news. Niko Hovinen is active and able to play after his scary “neck/whiplash” injury last week…but it is expected Scott Wedgewood plays tonight given that New Jersey Devils assistant coaches are expected to be in the building.
Also, McKelvie has been given number 9 and Young 22. No word just yet on what the second roster move would be to accommodate the second player added from Albany
1:40 PM — Yes, I’m at the rink this early. Actually, I was here around four hours earlier expecting a morning skate, but I instead ended up getting nicely asked to leave the arena by security since, unbeknownst to be, the players were in Lawrenceville instead. Lovely.
Perhaps part of the reason they wanted me out of there so quickly was that they were attempting to clean the ice of some brown marks that had been left by whatever they used to protect the ice during an event last night…but when I got here just now, several long smudge-marks are evident at the blue line across from the Titans bench. Not quite as bad as this, but still…
For the purpose of limiting who screams at me today, let me make it clear that this was an arena issue and not a Titans issue. And, as I joked on Twitter…after all the negative stuff I’ve had to write over the last four seasons here, it’s funny that this was my first time getting thrown out of the arena.
As for actual news…well, there is a good amount of it.
The Albany Devils have assigned wingers Harry Young and Chris McKelvie to the Titans. Trenton has also lost defenseman Mike Banwell on a call-up to the Worcester Sharks.
Young, the Devils’ seventh round pick in 2008, is looking to play the first game of his third professional season after sitting out the first few games at the AHL level this season, which McKelvie also did. Known more for his fists than his mitts, Young made a brief appearance in the capital city two years ago, playing in three games for the Trenton Devils. He also played the majority of last season in the ECHL, tallying 10 points in 32 games for Kalamazoo.
McKelvie is a 27-year-old winger who had been with the Rangers organization since 2009-10 prior to signing with the Devils this off-season. After a six-game stint in Hartford in 2009-10 after his collegiate career had ended, McKelvie has split the last two seasons between the AHL’s Connecticut Whale and ECHL’s Greenville Road Warriors.
Banwell was in his second season with the Titans, and had registered one point in the team’s first five games. He has 28 games of prior AHL experience, all with Albany. Banwell had been loaned to the Adirondack Phantoms for their training camp this season after signing with Trenton.
