First Three Signings Announced For 2012-13

Via Rich Lisk on Twitter — and he would know — the Trenton Titans have officially announced their first three signings for the 2012-13 season. Defenseman Eric Baier and forwards Matt Germain and Mark Armstrong have officially returned to Trenton.

Baier is a 24-year-old Summit, NJ native who struggled at times during his first full professional season in 2011-12. The 6-foot-2, 210 pound blueliner joined the Titans after finishing his collegiate career with Providence the previous season, which he followed by brief stints in both the AHL and ECHL.

He played in 51 games for Trenton last season and tallied four goals and 13 assists, but his -16 rating was second-worst on the team among defensemen, with only Corey Syvret behind him. Never the less, Baier’s upside is appealing at the next level, and he played in 18 AHL games last season with Albany and Rockford without collecting a point. He took just 11 minor penalties in 69 games between his three stops last year.

Germain is a 26-year-old streaky forward who was a teammate of Baier’s for all four years at Providence. He played well for the Trenton Devils after his college eligibility ended, posting seven points in nine games in 2010-11, but struggled with being a consistent contributor in his first full professional season.

He played in 63 games, but was tied for a team-worst -22, and posted just 24 points despite seeing increased ice time when playing with Ryan Hayes and Andy Bohmbach. Germain had two instances in which he scored goals in back-to-back games last season, as well as two multi-goal games, but he also endured goal-less stretches of 13 and a season-ending drought of 16.

Armstrong joined the Titans after his college season ended at St. Lawrence. In 120 NCAA games with the Saints, he tallied just 25 points, but he wasn’t brought in for offense.

The 24-year-old was asked to bring a physical presence to the team, and finished many a check towards the end of the season, evidently impressing head coach Vince Williams enough to bring him back for another look this year. But he did manage to score his first professional goal and add three assists in just six games last year, totals that could have been a little higher had he not been injured early in his stint with the team.
